Séverine Urwyler (*1984) Scenography and costume design | Performance art

Séverine Urwyler currently lives in Zurich and just finished her Master degree in “Scenic Arts Practice” at the University of Arts in Bern. She holds a BA in scenography and costume design from the Norwegian Theater Academy (NTA) in Fredrikstad, Norway. Further, she took a “Pre-course in Arts” at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, specializing in Film and Photography.
As founding member of the international artist collective VOLUMEN EXPRESS and friends, Séverine’s art work explores the borderline of installation and (theater) performance. Most works investigate documentary subjects such as her first large-scale installation “Tyskerjenter – German girl” (2008), a site specific theater installation staged on Hovedøya Island where an internment for so-called war-brides was situated in 1945. The piece deals with Norwegian women who had intimate relations with German soldiers during WW II. The lecture performance "Vi Beskytter Landed - We Protect the Country” (2009-12) takes a look at mutual war memories and was created for touring in high schools in Norway. Her works have received fundings from the Norwegian Cultural Council, Fond for Performing Arts (FFUK), Goethe Institut, Fond for Sound and Image (FfLOB) and the foundation Fritt Ord.

In fall 2013 Séverine was a participant of the Open Circle workshops in Riga and Krakow. Open Circle is a workshop series in the framework of the program «Cooperations 2012-2013» with Central and Eastern Europe, initiated by the liaison office of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia in Warsaw.
